Omar Habwe Ready to Add Experience, Versatility to Men's Hoops as Transfer

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — After three years with Mount St. Mary's, Omar Habwe signed with the Stony Brook men's basketball program as a graduate transfer on Wednesday.

Habwe appeared in 90 games, starting 26, in three seasons at The Mount. He averaged 19 minutes per contest.

Habwe finished his junior season as an efficient scorer (39.7 percent from the field, 34.1 percent from three) and rebounder, hauling in 3.3 boards per game.

"Omar is a fantastic addition for our program," Stony Brook head coach Geno Ford said. "He has size, athleticism and skill that will make us better. He's an older guy who is a fifth-year senior, so he will bring that mature, veteran locker room presence that championship teams have, and we are excited to have him on board."

The Lexington, Va., native brings leadership experience to the Seawolves program, as he was one of just four upperclassman on the Mountaineers last season.

His tenacity on the glass was highlighted against Bryant during the 2018-19 campaign, when he hauled in 17 boards and added 11 points for his first-career double double. That marks the third-highest rebonding total by a Mount player since the program moved to Division I for the 1988-89 season.

"This was a great opportunity for me," Habwe said. "I'm excited. My family is excited. I'm a high-energy guy who is very versatile and can grab rebounds and guard multiple positions. I'm just ready to get up there and start this new journey."

Habwe joins a promising pair of experienced perimeter forwards in Andrew Garcia and Mouhamadou Gueye.

Garcia earned second-team all-conference honors this past seasonand Gueye broke on to the scene as the league's premier shot blocker, leading the America East with 64.

All three will be in their final year of collegiate eligibility as they look to build on the Seawolves' second 20-win season in a row and seventh in the last nine years. Stony Brook will be one of the favorites in the America East and is looking to hang a second America East Tournament Championship banner.
