Tom Haun Enters Final Season Already on Program's Top-10 Goals List

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Tom Haun attended his first Stony Brook men's lacrosse game as a 12-year-old, when the Seawolves hosted Virginia in the NCAA quarterfinals in 2010.

Tewaaraton Award finalist Kevin Crowley set the program's single-season goals record in that heartbreaking one-goal defeat against the Cavaliers as a standing-room-only crowd exceeding 10,000 packed Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.

Five years later, Brody Eastwood eclipsed Crowley's single-season mark with 62 goals.

And now Haun also is part of that elite goal-scoring company as he enters his second senior season with the Seawolves.

In the final game before the 2020 season was shut down due to coronavirus, Haun — a 5-foot-10 attackman from Ronkonkoma — entered the top 10 in career goals in Stony Brook men's lacrosse history with No. 94.

Eastwood owns the program record with 181 career goals, followed by Jordan McBride (175), Kevin Pall (133), Mike Rooney (132) and Crowley (131).

Haun's next goal will match his former teammate, Alex Corpolongo, for ninth on the all-time list at 95.

The Seawolves began formal practices last Monday in preparation for the upcoming season.

Haun is back as a graduate student and co-captain after regaining a year of eligibility due to last season getting cut short due to coronavirus.

"Being from Long Island, I grew up watching a lot of those guys," Haun said. "To be recognized with the Brody Eastwoods of the program is really special."

Haun went on to label Corpolongo, with whom he overlapped for one season, "a great player and a great mentor to me."

Haun already has earned a bachelor's degree in business management from Stony Brook. He had started interviewing for post-graduation sales positions.

However, with an extra year of eligibility gained by last season getting halted seven games into the schedule, Haun instead is enrolled in a one-year, 36-credit MBA program while completing his college lacrosse career this season.

Haun originally committed to Stony Brook during his sophomore year of high school.

His 94 career goals are tied with UAlbany's Tehoka Nanticoke for second among active players in America East, two behind leader Jakob Patterson, who also is with the Great Danes.

"Tommy has made himself into one of the elite players in Stony Brook history by his toughness and relentless work ethic," coach Anthony Gilardi said. "I have loved every second of coaching him. We are very excited to see where he helps lead us this season."

Said Haun: "Last year was heartbreaking. To not even get a league game in was tough for me and a lot of my close friends who were seniors last year. Just having the opportunity to play again and be back with the boys is one of the best feelings. We're all just really excited to play again."

As for his memories of attending his first Stony Brook game back in 2010, Haun said: "I had no idea what it was going to be like, because I was still new in lacrosse at that point. The whole stadium was packed out. We couldn't get any parking. It was a close game and the student section was going nuts. It was a really cool experience."

Haun later learned that current teammate CJ Trenkle's older brother Timmy played in that game, and that current teammates Tom Dugan and Connor Grippe as well as Trenkle also were in attendance as fans during that NCAA quarterfinal. Dugan, Grippe, Haun and Trenkle, as well as fellow fifth-year player Chris Pickel Jr., are the Seawolves' 2021 co-captains.

"We were all there, and we didn't know each other," Haun said. "It's pretty cool."
