BOSTON – For the first time in her career, Stony Brook University junior guard
Gigi Gonzalez has been named the America East Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday.
Gonzalez led the Seawolves to another undefeated week as they posted wins over Columbia and St. Francis Brooklyn. The guard averaged 19.0 points, 2.5 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.0 rebounds per game.
The junior led the team with a career-high 21 points on 3-of-8 shooting from the field and went 14-of-16 from the free-throw line in the win at Columbia on Wednesday. The 14 made free-throws and 16 attempts were both career-highs for the guard as she drew a game-high nine fouls. She added four assists in 30 minutes of play.
Gonzalez took over the later stages of the game in the win over St. Francis Brooklyn. She finished first on the team in scoring with 17 points, 13 of which came in the fourth quarter. She shot 5-of-13 from the field, 2-of-4 from beyond the arc, and 5-of-6 from the line. The junior shot an efficient 4-of-5 from the field, 1-of-1 from deep, and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.
The Seawolves improved to a perfect 7-0 on the season after the win over St. Francis and are one of 12 teams in the nation that are currently 7-0. Stony Brook is one of 23 teams in the nation that is still undefeated. The 7-0 start to the season is the Seawolves' best in program history.
Stony Brook is back in action when it heads to the Bronx to take on New York state foe Fordham on Thursday, December 2, at 7 p.m. The Seawolves and Rams are set to go head-to-head for the ninth time in program history. The game is set to broadcast on ESPN+.
