Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Second Straight 80-Point Output Powers Men's Basketball to Win Over American

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — For the second straight game, the Stony Brook men's basketball team cracked 80 points.

For the second straight game, the Seawolves grabbed a win, earning an 80-53 decision over American on Wednesday night at Island Federal Arena. Anthony Roberts led the way with his first-career double-double, recording 19 points, 10 rebounds and dishing five assists.

It was a tight first 15 minutes, as Stony Brook led by five at 26-21 with 5:17 to go but the Seawolves would finish the half strong. A 19-2 run distanced the home team and it would go into the break with its largest halftime lead of the season at 20.

The Seawolves kept their distance in the second half as the lead was never lower than 13 and the host's offensive depth proved to be too much with four players scoring in double figures and a nearly 2-to-1 assist to turnover ratio.

STATS AND NOTES
  • Redshirt junior guard Anthony Roberts recorded his first-career double double with the Seawolves.
  • Graduate guard Jahlil Jenkins put in work early with 12 points and two assists in the first half, finishing with 16 points on 7-for-11 shooting.
  • Tykei Greene scored all six of his first half points on free-throws, going 6-of-7 from the line in the process. He finished the night with 13 points and grabbed seven boards.
  • Senior forward Jaden Sayles kicked off the scoring for the Seawolves with the team's first six points, ending the game with 12. It was his first game in double figures this season.
  • Freshman guard Kaine Roberts and redshirt freshman guard Preston Shumpert scored their first career points on a turnaround jumper and a three-pointer late in the second half, respectively.
  • The Seawolves' 45 first-half points were the most the team has scored in a game this season, while American's 25 were the fewest a team has scored against the Seawolves in the first half. The 20-point halftime lead was the largest of the season for the Seawolves.
  • The Seawolves held the Eagles scoreless from beyond the arc until early in the second half. The Eagles finished the night 5-of-19 (26.3%), the lowest three-point percentage of any team the Seawolves have faced this season.
  • Stony Brook grabbed 41 rebounds on the afternoon, the highest output of the year.
  • The squad's four blocked shots are tied for a team-high.
  • A game after hitting the landmark for the first time this season, the squad hit 80 points again tonight. It is the first time the squad has hit that mark in back to back games since February 2 and 6, 2019 when they scored 86 and 85.

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"I thought offensively, we played at a pretty high level. We really shared the ball with 13 assists and only had seven turnovers. We put the ball in good spots and really have some talented guys offensively. We've really started to figure each other out the last few games. This is a team offensively that can be dynamic and fun to watch. Hopefully we can keep this roll going." - head coach Geno Ford

"Coach has been harping on us that even though we are a team full of transfers, we are experienced. So just being able to play together has helped a lot in finding a rhythm. We are a smaller team and we have to do a good job of helping them on the boards and we did that tonight. We have so much talent on this team and I feel like we can make a run" - redshirt junior guard Anthony Roberts.

"A lot of these games are going to come down to the wire so this one felt good. It was nice to pull away early and allow a lot of people to get into the game and show what they can do. We really played together and did a great job of moving the ball. We had a lot of assists and our offense definitely ran well because of it" - graduate center Jaden Sayles.
