HARRISONBURG, Va. — Dawn Bodrug nearly did it again.
Bodrug flirted with a perfect game, retiring the game's first 17 batters, before a fluky hit ended the bid.
Stony Brook nonetheless went on to a 7-3 win against Rhode Island in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader to snap a three-game skid.
The Seawolves then went on to sweep URI with an 11-6 win in Game 2.
The neutral-site game was played at James Madison University.
Bodrug, a 5-foot-11 senior from Georgetown, Ontario, lost the perfect game with two out in the sixth when a checked swing resulted in a bloop in front of the plate, just beyond the reach of catcher
Jordyn Nowakowski, and Skyler Rapuano reached with a single. Sami Villarreal followed with a run-scoring double down the left-field line to spoil the shutout bid.
By then, Stony Brook had built a 7-0 lead.
Last season against Cornell, Bodrug tossed the program's first perfect game since 2012, fourth in Division I era and only of seven-inning length vs. Cornell.
Bodrug received more than enough support in a four-run first inning. The first four batters all reached, and
Alina Lance had a two-out, two-run single.
In Game 2,
Jourdin Hering broke a scoreless tie with a two-run single in the fourth. She now has a nine-game hitting streak.
Riley Craig built a 7-1 lead with a two-run homer in the sixth — her first long ball and second hit of the season.
Rhode Island got a three-run homer in its own four-run sixth to pull within 7-5.
Melissa Rahirch's two-run double and
Nicole McCarvill's two-run homer in the seventh reopened a six-run lead.
