Kori Cupid Scores, but Men's Soccer Handed First America East Defeat

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Aki Solvason got tripped in the box after collecting a rebound in the 40th minute. And on the ensuing penalty kick, reigning America East Goalkeeper of the Year Alejandro Robles stopped Kori Cupid's initial shot, but Cupid put the rebound into the back of the net off his left foot.

That drew the Stony Brook men's soccer team even late in the first half.

However, one minute into the second half, Stony Brook goalkeeper Edmond Kaiser's clearing attempt was blocked by Paul Mayer and ricocheted into the net for the decisive goal as 17th-ranked New Hampshire handed the Seawolves their first America East defeat, 2-1, on Friday afternoon at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.

Kaiser nonetheless had a strong performance, making five saves.

Trevor Harrison nearly had the equalizer in the 87th minute, but his shot rocketed off the crossbar.

Stony Brook dropped to 1-1-1 in conference play.

Robles had only surrendered one goal in three previous matches this season.

"It was a tough result today," coach Ryan Anatol said. "I thought we started slowly and we struggled in the windy conditions to move the ball, and we were not sharp enough in possession. But we defended really well again and limited them to few good chances. We grew into the game in the first half. It was good to get the goal and go into the half tied.

"I thought we had good momentum, but the mistake on the second goal changed the game. Credit the guys, they stuck with it and had a few near misses, and the shot off the bar, but ultimately we need to create more to put us in a better position to win these games."

The Seawolves return to action next Friday at UMBC.
