Men's Soccer Falls at Gusty UMBC, Goalkeeper Departs

BALTIMORE — Despite having a brisk wind in its players' faces during the second half, things looked up for the Stony Brook men's soccer team. The Seawolves held a one-goal lead, and UMBC's Jago Lott had been sent off with a red card in the 49th minute.

However, Spencer Hanks scored his first two collegiate goals, in the 58th and 85th minutes, and host UMBC rallied for a 2-1 win over the Seawolves on Friday afternoon.

The defeat left Stony Brook in a precarious position in America East's Pod C.

UMBC sits atop the three-team group at 2-2-1, followed by NJIT at 2-2 and Stony Brook at 1-2-1.

Stony Brook has matches remaining against NJIT next Friday and at UMass Lowell on April 9.

On Friday, goalkeeper Edmond Kaiser was injured during the match's opening minute after colliding with Waggoner. Kaiser briefly continued to play, but was forced to be assisted off the field by teammate Sean Towey and athletic trainer David Kovner only 2:56 into the match.

That led sophomore Curtis Copenhaver to enter for his second career appearance. Copenhaver had made his collegiate debut when he handled the second half against Hofstra on Feb. 28.

Kaiser's departure came immediately after officials awarded a free kick to the Seawolves at the edge of the box. With a gusty wind at his back, Trausti Birgisson buried the ensuing kick in the upper left corner of the net.

Stony Brook took that 1-0 lead into halftime. And things were looking up for the Seawolves, despite having to go into the wind in the second half, once UMBC's Lott was assessed the red card and the Retrievers were forced to play with 10 men.

Still, playing down a man the remainder of the match, the Retrievers overtook Stony Brook.

Copenhaver nonetheless had a handful of solid saves. That included tipping Waggoner's shot from 45 yards out over the crossbar in the 77th minute to preserve a 1-1 tie at the time.

Meanwhile, it appeared that the Seawolves had been awarded a penalty kick in the 59th minute, when Towey seemingly was upended. However, the referee's call was overturned by the assistant referee.

"Our guys went on the road today and competed in really difficult conditions and put in a performance that deserved better," coach Ryan Anatol said. "We were in control up a goal in the second half. But the wind made difficult situations out of nothing and they were able to capitalize on a couple of those moments."
