STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Mike McCannell and Matt Anderson are two of the newest draftees in Major Series Lacrosse in their native Ontario.

McCannell was selected in the first round (fourth overall) and Matt Anderson was selected in the second round (10th overall), both by the Oakville Rock, on Thursday night.

The MSL is a Senior A box lacrosse league based in Ontario.

McCannell and Anderson will join an Oakville roster this summer that also includes Stony Brook alum Challen Rogers. 

"I'm super-excited," McCannell said. "They have a phenomenal team. They have plenty of [fellow] Northmen [junior league] alumni — guys I grew up watching — as well as a great coaching staff. It's an organization that I'm pumped to play for. Also, I'm pumped for Anderson. It's great to be his teammate back home, as well as other Stony Brook alumni, including Challen Rogers."

McCannell and Anderson's Stony Brook teammate, Caleb Pearson, similarly was drafted in first round (sixth overall) by the Langley Thunder in the 2021 Western Lacrosse Association Graduating Junior Player Draft in his native Alberta on Feb. 11.

McCannell, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound midfielder, has produced eight goals and seven assists in six games this season with Stony Brook.

Anderson, a 5-11, 185-pound midfielder, has nine goals and two assists in six games.

Anderson started his junior career in Oakville, playing two years for the Buzz.

"So it's cool that I'm going to start my senior career back in Oakville," Anderson said."I was just so grateful to get drafted by such a great organization and am super-excited to get going this summer. For them to be right around the corner from my house makes this all that much better." 

The Seawolves (3-3, 1-1 AE) continue America East play on Saturday when they play at UMass Lowell at noon.
