STONY BROOK, N.Y. — When
Tyquell Fields connected with
Delante Hellams Jr. on a 29-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter, the Stony Brook football team had moved within a two-point conversion of pulling even against Maine on Saturday.
However, Maine's Richard Carr broke up the ensuing conversion pass attempt, and the Black Bears added a pair of TDs later in the period, en route to a 35-19 victory over Stony Brook at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.
Ty Son Lawton rushed for a career-high 134 yards on 22 carries and one TD in the defeat. His previous best had come with a 124-yard performance against New Hampshire during the 2019 season.
The Seawolves (0-3 CAA) had held a 13-7 halftime lead.
Stony Brook engineered a 15-play, 75-yard touchdown drive, capped by a 1-yard run by Fields, to open the scoring late in the first quarter. The drive was highlighted by a 17-yard run from Lawton that brought the Seawolves to the Maine 22.
After Maine grabbed a 7-6 lead on Joe Fagnano's 3-yard run, Stony Brook answered with a seven-play, 70-yard touchdown drive that consumed only 2:56 to retake the lead. Lawton's 1-yard run capped a drive that included a 29-yard scamper by
Seba Nekhet.
Hellams had a team-high four receptions for 68 yards.
"Certainly I thought we played a good first half," coach
Chuck Priore said. "We had a chance for a two-point conversion early in the fourth quarter to tie the game, which we didn't get. We wouldn't have needed it if we missed the first extra point."
Stony Brook returns to action next Saturday at UAlbany.
