Defensive Statement! Football Tops UAlbany; Campbell, Chimienti Produce Picks

ALBANY, N.Y. — The Stony Brook football team stepped up its defense against a rival on Saturday afternoon.

The Seawolves got interceptions from Chris Campbell and Nick Chimienti and made a slew of other big defensive plays  to claim the Golden Apple with a 21-7 win against UAlbany.

Stony Brook (1-3, 1-3 CAA) earned its first victory of the season.

Among the big stops for Stony Brook's defense:

• In the first quarter, Casey Williams and Campbell combined to halt Karl Mofor on a fourth-and-1 play at the Stony Brook 43.

• During a UAlbany drive later in the quarter, Gregory Young II tipped a pass and Campbell pulled down the interception.

• In the third quarter, the freshman Chimienti produced his first career interception.

• In the fourth quarter, Tyler King forced a fumble and Peterson Octavien scooped it up and raced a dozen yards to the UAlbany 4.

• On fourth-and-8 from the Stony Brook 13, UAlbany quarterback Joey Carino was sacked by Sam Kamara with 5:25 remaining in the game.

"We forced turnovers," coach Chuck Priore said. "We made a lot of third-down stops. We played the game physical up front."

Chimienti saw significant action after TJ Morrison was forced to depart with a hamstring injury on the game's opening play. The freshman's pick led to a touchdown drive that staked Stony Brook to a 14-0 lead. Tyquell Fields had a 37-yard scamper to highlight the 54-yard drive. He connected with tight end Cal Redman for the 6-yard TD.

On the first play after Octavien's recovery, Ty Son Lawton had a 4-yard touchdown run — his second TD of the game — to restore the Seawolves' two-touchdown lead.

Lawton rushed 28 times for 114 yards.

Fields had sprained his ankle in the first quarter and had difficulty stepping into throws. But he gutted through the performance with backup Joshua Zamot already sidelined.

"I think we had some 'man' efforts," Priore said.

Priore also saluted his linebackers, King and Campbell. The Seawolves lost Keirston Johnson in the second quarter due to injury.

"The other two linebackers had to play every rep of the game," Priore said. "We had some guys who just kept stepping up. It was good to see. Efforts, we've been giving. We just got the outcome we've been looking for."
