Volleyball Hands UAlbany First Defeat, Remains in AE Playoff Contention

ALBANY, N.Y. — The Stony Brook volleyball team handed UAlbany its first America East defeat on Monday to remain in contention for a postseason spot.

The Seawolves defeated the host Great Danes, 27-25, 25-20, 25-23, to cap a successful day.

Earlier in the day, Stony Brook topped Hartford, 25-16, 25-20, 24-26, 25-21.

The dual wins improved Stony Brook to 6-4 in conference play.

The top two teams in America East will qualify for the conference's postseason and square off for the title.

UAlbany, now 9-1 after Monday's loss to the Seawolves, has secured the top spot.

UMBC, which owns a tiebreaker with Stony Brook, currently occupies second place at 7-3.

The Seawolves then are 6-4, while New Hampshire is 5-3.

Stony Brook has a doubleheader at winless Binghamton remaining in the regular season.

The Seawolves had UAlbany on the ropes on Sunday, taking the first two sets before ultimately falling.

A day later, Stony Brook closed out the match in three sets.

Enitan Omolewa had 14 kills and Abby Campbell had 13 kills. Torri Henry had 42 assists. Sabrina Patriciello had 21 digs.

"Coming into this match and performing the way we did was pure determination after a really tough weekend schedule," coach Kristin Belzung said. "We knew each set was going to be tight, and I thought we executed down the stretch when it mattered. We have struggled to stay focused in the third set, so I'm a proud coach of this effort.

"We know we need some help to have a chance at the championship match, but we are focused on controlling the things we can. This has been a theme throughout this year for us. I'm excited about the growth and progress of our young team. We are excited to finish out the regular season next weekend at Binghamton, and hopefully earn an opportunity for a championship match."
