STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The first Stony Brook softball home games in two seasons were worth the wait.
Shelbi Denman produced her first complete game of the season in Game 2 and the Stony Brook softball team heads into America East play on a four-game winning streak after sweeping Fairleigh Dickinson, 9-0 and 8-0, on Thursday afternoon at University Field.
In Game 1,
Dawn Bodrug limited the Knights to two hits in a five-inning shutout,
Kyra McFarland went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and
Lindsey Osmer drove in three runs.
The Seawolves took command with a four-run first inning that included a two-run single from Osmer and an RBI double from
Jordyn Nowakowski.
Stony Brook then took a nine-run lead with a four-run third highlighted by
Melissa Rahrich's two-run double.
In Game 2, Denman produced her fifth career shutout and the Seawolves again took command early. In a three-run first,
Riley Craig had a two-run double and Osmer followed with a two-run single.
Four runs in the sixth inning, capped by an RBI from
Nicole McCarvill, ended the game.
Denman limited FDU to two hits.
"I thought she threw really well," coach
Megan T. Bryant said. "She was getting ahead of hitters, was spinning the ball well, and was efficient and using her defense."
The Seawolves did not play a home game in 2020 before COVID-19 shut down sports.
Stony Brook opens America East play when it hosts Binghamton for three games this weekend.
"We're playing well," Bryant said. "I think we're in a good spot heading into AE play."
