Men's Soccer Draws with UMBC In America East Opener

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The Stony Brook men's soccer team got on the board in its America East opener on Friday afternoon.

The Seawolves played to a 0-0 draw at Kenenth P. LaValle Stadium.

Bidding for a goal in a third straight game to begin his collegiate career, Aki Solvason had a big chance in the 74th minute. The Icelandic freshman sent a shot on goal with his right foot off a feed from Jack Valderrabano, but the chance resulted in a kick save by UMBC goalkeeper Quantrell Jones.

Gabriel Fernandes then got a shot off in a scrum off the ensuing corner.

Earlier, UMBC had a potential goal from Spencer Hanks waved off in the 64th minute due to an offside call. On the play, Kori Cupid's clearing attempt struck Matias Prando and ricocheted to Hanks behind the Stony Brook duo.

Goalkeeper Edmond Kaiser produced the clean sheet for the Seawolves.

Saevar Fylkisson made his collegiate debut in the match.

"It was good to get a clean sheet, and I thought a point was a fair result," coach Ryan Anatol said. "We showed today that we can be resilient and tough to beat defensively. We started the game really well and created some good chances. It was an unbelievable save from their keeper to deny Aki. I felt like we lost some steam in the second half and overall lacked a cutting edge in the final third, but we continue to make positive progress."

The Seawolves (0-2-1) return to action next Friday at NJIT.
