STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The America East preseason favorite opened league play on the right foot Sunday.
The Stony Brook women's soccer team received first-half goals from
Rachel Florenz,
Alyssa Francese and
Chelsie DePonte en route to a 3-1 win against UMBC at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.
Florenz, a senior from East Islip, got the Seawolves (1-2, 1-0 AE) on the scoreboard in the 14th minute off an assist from DePonte.
"Our team was calm on the attack and found me, and I was able to keep it and get a shot off," DePonte said. "Flo did her thing and followed up, which is what we talked a lot about today. It was a good team goal."
After UMBC tied the score, Francese converted on a penalty kick in the 22nd minute for the eventual game-winner.
"I think everyone had a great mindset today," DePonte said. "We executed our game plan well and played for each other. We stayed calm and were able to put away some of our chances. It was great to get our first win during conference play. We'll continue to build off of this."
Stony Brook, picked first in the America East preseason poll, returns to action next Sunday at Binghamton.
