STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Dawn Bodrug again flirted with a no-hitter. And the Stony Brook softball team earned another solid nonconference victory on Wednesday.
Kyra McFarland and
Alina Lance each had a pair of hits and the Seawolves defeated host Seton Hall, 2-0, at Essex County Mike Sheppard Sr. Field.
Bodrug retired the game's first 13 batters and took a perfect-game bid into the fifth, when she surrendered a one-out double to Janae Barracato.
The defense came up big that inning to keep Seton Hall off the scoreboard.
Shauna Nuss made an inning-ending lunging catch in right-center to strand Barracato in scoring position.
"I knew there were two outs," Nuss said. "I had to make the catch — lay out ... why not? And it had some hang time on it. I knew Dawn was pitching a great game. I wanted to be there for her and threw my body at it."
Stony Brook opened the scoring in the fourth when
Nicole McCarvill trotted home on a throwing error after
Lindsey Osmer stole second.
An inning later, the Seawolves opened a two-run lead when McFarland singled up the middle to plate Lance.
Bodrug limited the Pirates to the lone hit while striking out six in a complete game. She has two career no-hitters to her name, including against Binghamton on March 27 in the America East opener.
"I was really just hitting my spots, working with my catcher and Coach Letts," Bodrug said. "Every inning we had a game plan for the next inning. They're an aggressive-hitting team. They like to take their hacks. I just had to hit my spots, work my spin, and obviously rely on my defense. It was a textbook game of just using your defense and making plays."
Stony Brook and Seton Hall meet again with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday at University Field on Long Island.
