ORONO, Maine. — The Stony Brook softball team continues to separate itself from the rest of America East.
The Seawolves won Sunday's rubber game against Maine, 7-0, behind
Dawn Bodrug's second shutout of the three-game series.
Bodrug escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fourth with three straight strikeouts. She struck out 22 Black Bears in 14 scoreless innings in the series.
Stony Brook improved to 7-1 in America East. That opens a two-game lead on UMBC and UMass Lowell (both 5-3) for the conference's top spot.
On Sunday, the Seawolves erupted for three first-inning runs, capped by Jordyn Nowakowki's RBI double.
Nicole McCarvill's and Nowakowski later produced solo homers.
McCarvill had two RBIs and two runs scored in the series finale.
Jourdin Hering had three hits.
Hering became the program's all-time singles leader with No. 151, passing Shayla Giosia (150, 2012-15).
McCarvill's diving stop at shortstop with one out in the sixth held Keely Clark to an infield single and kept Jasmine Gray at third base, preserving Bodrug's shutout bid. Bodrug followed with back-to-back strikeouts.
"We responded very well to the tough loss in Game 2 on Saturday and came out today ready to win a key ballgame and the series," coach Megan T. Bryant said. "All three parts of our game — offense, defense and pitching were on point. We played with great synergy and focus, and those intangibles are key at this time of the year."
The Seawolves return to action Wednesday when they host UMass Lowell for a noon doubleheader at University Field.
