Rahrich Sets Program RBI Record; Seventh-Inning Loss Sets Up Saturday Showdown

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The Stony Brook and UMBC softball teams will have a winner-take-all game on Saturday for the America East regular-season title.

On a day Melissa Rahrich set the program record for RBIs, the Seawolves came within one out of clinching their first regular-season title since 2015.

However, after routing UMBC 11-2 in five innings in Friday's series opener, UMBC posted three runs in the seventh inning of Game 2 to post a 3-2 victory.

The teams now each own a 10-5 record in conference play entering Saturday's noon showdown at University Field to determine the regular-season champ and host for next week's conference tournament.

Rahrich drove in both runs against UMBC ace Courtney Coppersmith in Game 2 as the Seawolves took a 2-0 lead to the seventh. Rahrich also was bidding for a shutout at that point.

Rahrich nonetheless completed Friday's doubleheader with six RBIs, giving her 165 for her career. That passed Shayla Giosia, who amassed 163 RBIs from 2012 through 2015, for the program record.

"I wasn't expecting to do it today," Rahrich said. "I had a slow start to the season. I knew I was close, but I didn't expect to do it in one day."

UMBC coach Chris Kuhlmeyer had held back Coppersmith, his ace, for Game 2, seemingly to avoid a direct matchup with Stony Brook ace Dawn Bodrug.

The Retrievers pitching staff had entered the series having tossed 19 consecutive scoreless innings.

It was a memorable day for multiple reasons for the Seawolves. Stony Brook honored six student-athletes during a pregame ceremony: Jourdin HeringJordyn Nowakowski, Danielle Petrovich, Alina Lance, Riley Craig and Rahrich.

"The first game was pretty special. And then the second game the effort was there. The result just wasn't," coach Megan T. Bryant said. "It's a battle of the two top teams in America East. You knew it was going to come down to the wire."
