SAN JUAN — India Pagan is headed to the Olympics with a silver medal already in hand.
Pagan and her Puerto Rico teammates reached the finals of the 2021 FIBA Women's AmeriCup before falling to Team USA in the finals, 74-59, on Saturday at Coliseo Roberto Clemente.
Pagan and Puerto Rico next depart for Spain on July 10 for a scrimmage against that country before leaving five days later for Tokyo and the Summer Games.
Pagan, a forward with the Stony Brook women's basketball team, will become the first active student at the university ever to participate in the Olympics and the third with ties to the university.
She follows Lucy Van Dalen '12, who ran the 5000 meters representing New Zealand in the 2012 Olympics in London, and the late Roger Gill '94, a sprinter who represented Guyana in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
In AmeiCup, Pagan averaged 2.4 points and 1.6 rebounds while logging 12.9 minutes per game over five games.
Puerto Rico's lone two losses in the tourney came to the United States, which also is headed to Tokyo.
