PHILADELPHIA — It was a historic night for Stony Brook men's lacrosse, as two players were selected in the first round of the National Lacrosse League Entry Draft. Mike McCannell was selected fifth overall to the San Diego Seals, while Patrick Kaschalk was picked 16th overall to the Albany Firewolves.
They will be the 12th and 13th picks from Stony Brook, a stretch that dates back to Rhys Duch's selection in 2008, and the Seawolves as a program now have seven over the last five seasons.

"I am so excited and pumped for Mike and Pat," head coach Anthony Gilardi said. "Getting drafted in the NLL first round is a tremendous honor. It's a credit to the type of players, and more importantly, the type of people they are. They embody what Seawolves Lacrosse is all about. They are are tough, hard working and great teammates."

McCannell, who will return to Seawolves Country for his graduate year in 2022, finished third in points with 19 goals and 19 helpers during the 2021 campaign that saw Stony Brook make an appearance in the America East semifinals.

"I'm excited to take my talents to San Diego and be a Seal," the Orangeville, Ontario native said. "Long Island is a lacrosse hotbed and Stony Brook completely embodies all of that. I absolutely love playing here and they've given me an incredible opportunity playing here and I'm excited to finish off this last year and hopefully we can get to where we want to be."

Kaschalk's 2021 campaign was highlighted by a hat trick performance against rival UAlbany on March 27. He finished the year with six goals and an assist, culminating his Seawolves career with 47 points.
