Francese’s Game-Winner Leads Seawolves to Home Opener Victory

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Graduate forward Alyssa Francese's second half goal in the 47th minute gave Stony Brook a 1-0 advantage that it would not relinquish en route to a thrilling victory in the 2021 home opener at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. The Seawolves were paced by their second-straight stout defensive effort as they picked up their second consecutive clean sheet on Sunday afternoon.

Francese got the Seawolves on the board in the 47th minute with her first goal of the season. The forward was the recipient of a loose ball in the box following sophomore defender Kerry Pearson's free kick that bounced off a Columbia defender at the 20-yard line. Francese corralled the ball inside the box and sent a one-touch shot passed Columbia's goalkeeper Audrey Byrne to give the Seawolves a 1-0 advantage.

The Seawolves' backline was strong yet again as they held the Columbia offensive attack in check. Junior goalkeeper Emerson Richmond Burke recorded her second clean sheet in as many chances to help guide Stony Brook to its first triumph of the 2021 campaign.

STATS AND NOTES
  • Francese's goal was her first of the season and the 37th of her career. The tally marked her 17th career game-winning goal. Francese has recorded points in 33 of 71 career matches. The graduate currently ranks third on the Seawolves' all-time career goals list and is behind Erica Keller (45 goals) and Lisa Paladino (42 goals).
  • Pearson's assist was her second of the season and the fourth of her career. The defender has registered assists in two out of the first three matches of the season.
  • Richmond Burke recorded four saves, all of which came in the first half, as she picked up her second consecutive shutout. The back-to-back clean sheets mark the second time in her career that she has shutout opponents in two-straight matches. Richmond Burke last recorded back-to-back clean sheets in the 2021 Spring season when she shutout Binghamton on March 14, and NJIT on March 21.
  • Stony Brook held Columbia off the board after the Lions put up three goals in a 3-3 tie in their season opener against St. John's.
  • The Seawolves improved their all-time record against Columbia to 11-10-4 and picked up their first win over the Lions since October 23, 2001.
  • Stony Brook outshot Columbia, 8-6, and each team recorded four shots on target. The Seawolves won the battle for the corners, 5-3.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"It was a great team effort today and I'm overall happy with our performance. There are still things we need to improve on but we are a young team and we are learning as we go," said women's soccer head coach Tobias Bischof.

"It's a great feeling to get our first win of the season. It was a total team effort top to bottom and it paid off for us in the end result. I was super happy to get one on the board for the team to get us going in the right direction to continue this year," said Francese.
