COLLEGE PARK, MD. — A strong offensive attack led by junior outside hitter
Amiyah De'Long and freshman middle blocker
Erin Garr paced the Stony Brook University women's volleyball team (5-7) to a 3-1 win over Columbia (2-5) on Friday. De'Long and Garr both put up career-highs in kills, while sophomore setter
Torri Henry tallied her ninth 30-plus assist performance of the season.
Stony Brook jumped ahead in the match by claiming the opening set, 27-25. The first set was a back-and-forth frame that saw neither team go up by more than three points over the duration of it. Ultimately, the Seawolves were able to pull away by going on a 3-0 run down the stretch to pick up the win.
The second set began no different than the first as both teams traded points early on and were knotted up at 6-6. Stony Brook went on a 5-0 run that gave it an 11-6 lead and would never look back. Columbia closed the deficit to as little as one point (17-16), but the Seawolves would go on another substantial run to pull away.
Stony Brook went on a 6-0 run to go up 23-16 in the set as they were fueled by
Erin Garr, who had the serve for the duration of the run. Garr accounted for an ace and a kill over the stretch. The seven-point deficit was too much for the Lions to overcome and the Seawolves closed out the frame by the final set score of 25-19.
The Lions avoided being swept by coming away with a win in the third set by a score of 25-17. The Seawolves responded by taking the fourth and what would be final set, 25-21, to pick up the win. Stony Brook battled its way to victory in the fourth set after trailing, 5-0, to start the frame.
The Seawolves settled in and responded by chipping away at the lead. Stony Brook ended up outscoring the Lions, 25-16, following going down, 5-0, in the beginning of the match. The win in four sets marked the second time this season that the Seawolves downed an opponent in four frames (also beat Tarleton State in four sets on Sep. 10).

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"It's great to get the win to start the weekend. The entire match was a bit of a grind offensively but I thought we continued to make adjustments defensively which kept us in the battle. I also thought we point scored and served well against some of Columbia's weaker rotations which allowed us a little wiggle room. Tomorrow will be a tough schedule with Maryland and a quick turnaround to end the weekend with a good Akron team," said head coach
Kristin Belzung.
