Fernandes' Penalty, Stout Home Defense Propels Men's Soccer to Second Straight Win

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Grad student Gabriel Fernandes was given a golden opportunity in the last minute of the first half and he made it count.

After Aki Solvason was taken down in the box by Columbia keeper Michael Collodi, the North Babylon, N.Y. native, struck his 12-yard shot right down the middle to give the Seawolves all they would need in a shutout victory over Columbia on Monday afternoon at LaValle Stadium.

A dangerous ball into the box was dropped by Collodi and as Solvason ran around him, the keeper grabbed the sophomore, and brought him to the ground, drawing the straight red and sending Columbia to a 10-man field for the rest of the afternoon.

Edmond Kaiser recorded his second clean sheet of the season, including a right-handed stop in the 67th minute that kept the Seawolves ahead.
STATS AND NOTES
  • Kaiser kept clean sheet number six on his career and has allowed less than a goal per game in his first four outings.
  • Fernandes is up to seven career goals after his first of the 2021 campaign. His last goal came off a free kick against NJIT on April 2, 2021.
  • Stony Brook is now 2-1 at LaValle Stadium this season.
  • Sophomore Trevor Harrison made his home debut for the Seawolves, coming off the bench in the 35th minute.
  • Classmate Selcuk Kahveci tallied a season-high three shots, with one on goal. He has put a shot on frame in each of his four appearances this year.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"It was a great team win for us today. We defended well to keep their opportunities to a minimum and did a good job creating chances, ultimately getting the goal in the first half. I'm proud of our defense, who has done well to start the year, especially at home, only allowing one goal. This is something we'd like to continue as we build throughout the course of the season," said head coach Ryan Anatol

"We're doing a good job right now, not letting a lot of chances. Our back line shifts really well and any shots on goal are very tough to get. We always seem to score one on the other end and that's how we've gotten it done so far," said goalkeeper Edmond Kaiser
