Seawolves Extend Winning Streak to Three in a Row with Victory Over Vermont

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook University women's basketball team (12-2, 3-1 America East) returned to Island Federal Arena and picked up a gritty win over Vermont (7-7, 1-2 America East), 65-59, on Wednesday night. The Seawolves were paced by four student-athletes who scored in double figures to lead the team to their league leading 12th win of the season.

With the victory, Stony Brook extended its winning streak to three games in a row and are winners of five out of their last six games. Senior guard Anastasia Warren led the Seawolves in scoring as she poured in 16 points en route to the win.

Warren was joined by graduate forward Leighah-Amori Wool, graduate forward India Pagan, and senior guard Earlette Scott, who all scored in double-digits. Wool finished with 12 points, while Pagan and Scott each chipped in 11 points apiece.

The Seawolves took a 30-29 lead into the halftime break as they outscored Vermont, 12-9, in the second quarter to take a narrow one-point advantage. Warren led Stony Brook with eight points in the first half and converted her 100th career three-pointer with 8:14 to play in the first quarter.

Stony Brook was able to build its lead in the second half and a 7-0 scoring run down the stretch helped seal the game for the hosts. The Seawolves' lead grew to as large as 11 points with 2:43 to play in the game. The Catamounts were able to cut Stony Brook's advantage to as little as two points, 59-57, with 33 seconds to play.

Timely free-throw shooting was able to seal the win for the Seawolves. Stony Brook went 6-of-6 from the free-throw line over the final 22 seconds to close out the game. Senior forward Nairimar Vargas-Reyes converted four of those free-throws and came up with a crucial offensive rebound to help Stony Brook clinch the victory.
