STONY BROOK, N.Y. — In a season-best performance on the defensive end, the Stony Brook men's basketball team was able to continue its hot streak at home, earning a 65-51 win over UMBC in front of 1,770 fans at Island Federal Arena Monday evening.
Tykei Greene recorded his third double-double of 2021-22, leading the way with 11 points and 12 boards. He also finished a team-high plus 27 in 33 minutes of action.
Jahlil Jenkins caught fire in the second half, scoring a game-high 17 points with 15 coming in the second 20 minutes of play as Stony Brook grew its lead as large as 18 late in the frame.
After falling behind by 11 in the first ten minutes, the Seawolves ripped off a 14-0 run and forced five UMBC turnovers in the process, turning a 19-8 deficit into a 22-19 advantage. UMBC retook the lead at 24-22, but after a
Frankie Policelli 3-pointer gave the Seawolves the lead at 27-24, the hosts would not trail again.
Stony Brook now sits at 10-6 and 2-1 in America East play.
STATS AND NOTES
- Stony Brook was paced by three student-athletes scoring in double figures. Jenkins led the way with a game-high 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field and 2-of-4 from three-point range.
- Jenkins scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half as he shot a near perfect 6-of-7 from the floor in the half. Jenkins has scored in double figures in 13 out of 15 games this season and has scored over 15 points in a game six times.
- Greene finished with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Four of Greene's 12 rebounds were of the offensive variety as he helped the Seawolves win the battle for the boards, 45-34.
- He now has eight career double doubles, tying hiim with Ahmad Walker for seventh all-time in Stony Brook history.
- Redshirt sophomore guard Tyler Stephenson-Moore posted a near double-double with eight points and eight rebounds. His eight boards were one off his best against league opposition.
- Redshirt junior guard Anthony Roberts came off the bench to score 11 points in 22 minutes of actions. Nine of his 11 points came in the second half of play, earning him his 11th game in double figures this season.
- With the win, the Seawolves improved to 9-1 at Island Federal Arena and have won seven-straight games on their home court.
- Stony Brook held UMBC to 51 points, the fewest that any opponent has scored against them this season. The 51 points allowed are the fewest points an opponent has scored against the Seawolves since UAlbany scored 43 points on February 20, 2021.
