RICHMOND, Va. – For the second time this season, Stony Brook freshman forward Gabrielle Côté has been named the CAA Rookie of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday.
The freshman fueled Stony Brook's offense on Sunday at Hofstra, tallying the only two goals for the squad in the 2-1 victory over the Pride, helping the Seawolves clinch their first-ever berth into the CAA Championship Tournament. Côté is one of three members in the Stony Brook women's soccer program to be named CAA Rookie of the Week this season (
Linn Beck on Sept. 26 and
Luciana Setteducate on Oct. 17). The Canadian also earned Rookie of the Week honors on October 10 after recording her first two career goals in Stony Brook's 4-4 draw at Drexel.
After falling to an early 1-0 deficit to the Pride, Côté chased down a pass from Setteducate in the 33
rd minute, chipped it over the head of Hofstra's goalkeeper and into the back of the net to tie the match at 1-1. The game-winner came in the second half of the contest when Côté buried a rebound off the crossbar, giving the squad the lead and ultimately the 2-1 victory to push themselves into the CAA title hunt.
For the team, Côté sits within the top-five in various offensive categories such as goals (4), points (10), shots (19), shots on goal (12), game winning goals (1). The freshman has also notched nine points in the past four matches.
No. 6 Stony Brook will travel to Philadelphia, Pa. to take on No. 3 Northeastern in the CAA Quarterfinal on Thursday, October 27 at 5:30 p.m. at Drexel. The winner of the matchup will compete in the semifinals on Sunday, October 30 in Philadelphia. The final is currently slated for Saturday, November 5 at the highest seed remaining.
