Game Recap: Softball |

Badger’s Four-Homer Day Powers Softball to Two Wins

MIAMI, Fla. – Junior catcher Corinne Badger powered the Stony Brook University softball team to a pair of wins on opening day as she slugged four home runs in four at-bats. The Seawolves went on to defeat Drexel in the season opener, 5-3, and then knocked off FIU, 6-2, in the nightcap.

GAME 1: STONY BROOK – 5, DREXEL – 3
  • The Seawolves jumped on the board first in the bottom of the second inning as Badger launched a solo home run to left field.
  • After falling behind, 2-1, courtesy of a two-run home run by Drexel's Jackie Masone, Badger put the Seawolves back in front. The catcher drilled her second homer of the game, this time a two-run shot that gave Stony Brook a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.
  • Drexel got the game even at 3-3 on Masone's second home run of the game in the top of the sixth inning.
  • Stony Brook answered in the bottom of the sixth inning as sophomore utility Catherine Anne Kupinski drove in what would be the game-winning runs with a two-out two-run single to put the Seawolves up 5-3.
  • Graduate pitcher Dawn Bodrug earned her first win of the season as she tossed a complete game. Bodrug went 7.0 innings, allowed three runs (all earned), on seven hits, and struck out eight.
  • Badger went 2-2 at the dish with two home runs, three RBI, and was hit by a pitch.
  • Sophomore outfielder Julianna Sanzone went 2-3 with a pair of singles and scored a run.
  • Kupinski entered the game as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the sixth inning and went 1-1 with the game-winning hit being a two-run single.
GAME 2: STONY BROOK – 6, FIU – 2
  • Stony Brook jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Badger clubbed a three-run home run to center field. Her homer chased in sophomore outfielder Alicia Orosco who singled to lead off the game and senior infielder Lindsey Osmer who drew a two-out walk that set the stage for the Seawolves' backstop.
  • The Seawolves extended their advantage to 5-0 in the top of the second inning behind gritty base running and timely hitting. Senior infielder Nicole McCarvill scored from third after junior infielder Brooke Dye stole second and both advanced on the throw. Later in the inning, sophomore infielder Kyra McFarland chased Dye in with a triple to right center.
  • Stony Brook scored its sixth and final run when Badger crushed her second home run of the game (fourth of the day) down the left field line.
  • Senior pitcher Shelbi Denman picked up the win. Denman tossed a complete game and allowed two runs (unearned), on five hits, and struck out six.
  • Badger went 2-2 with two home runs, four RBI, and one walk.
  • Orosco went 2-4 with a single, a double, and scored a run.
STATS AND NOTES
  • Over the two games, Badger went 4-4 with four home runs, seven RBI, and four runs scored. In addition, she was hit by a pitch and drew a walk in six plate appearances.
  • Sanzone went 3-7 on the day with a double and a run scored.
  • Bodrug tossed her 27th career complete game, while Denman went the distance for the 13th time in her career.
