Bodrug Shutout & Badger Walk-Off Lifts Softball to Two Wins on Saturday

MIAMI, Fla. – The Stony Brook University softball team carried its momentum from Friday night into Saturday as it picked up two more wins to improve to 4-0 on the young season. The Seawolves knocked off South Dakota, 7-0, in the first game of the day and then went on to walk it off in a 4-3 victory over Brown in game two.

Graduate pitcher Dawn Bodrug led the Seawolves to their first win of the day as she tossed a complete game shutout in the 7-0 win over South Dakota. Junior catcher Corinne Badger slugged a walk-off three-run home run to lift the Seawolves to a 4-3 win against Brown.

GAME 1: STONY BROOK – 7, SOUTH DAKOTA – 0
  • Bodrug put together a stellar performance as she pitched a complete game two-hit shutout en route to her second win this season. The graduate allowed just two singles over 7.0 shutout innings of work. Bodrug struck out five and walked two in her second start of the season.
  • Senior infielder Lindsey Osmer went 3-4 at the dish with a home run and two RBI. Osmer opened up the scoring for the Seawolves with an RBI single to right in the top of the first inning. In the seventh inning, Osmer launched her first home run of the year – a solo shot to left field.
  • Sophomore outfielder Alicia Orosco went 1-3 at the plate and drove in one run. Orosco chased in a run with a single to center field in the top of the second inning.
  • Sophomore infielder Kyra McFarland went 1-4 on the day with two RBI. McFarland drove in a pair of runs with a double to right field in the top of the sixth.
  • Junior infielder Shauna Nuss finished the game 1-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Nuss plated a run with a sacrifice fly to left field in the top of the second inning.
  • The seven runs scored were the team's most in a game so far this season.

GAME 2: STONY BROOK – 4, BROWN – 3
  • Badger was the hero in game two as she won the game for the Seawolves with a three-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Badger stepped up to the plate as a pinch hitter and launched her fifth home run of the weekend over the left field fence. Badger chased in Brooke Dye and Catherine Anne Kupinski who both got on base with walks earlier in the inning.
  • Dye drove in the Seawolves' first run of the game with an RBI single to right field that scored Osmer.
  • Osmer went 1-3 on the day with a double and a run scored.
  • Junior pitcher Ashton Melaas made her first career start. She tossed 6.0 innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits, and walked four.
  • Senior pitcher Shelbi Denman earned the win, her second of the weekend. Denman came on in relief in the seventh inning and got out of the inning without surrendering a run.
STATS AND NOTES
  • Badger hit her fifth home run of the weekend. The junior has gone 5-9 with five home runs and 10 RBI through the first four games of the season.
  • Osmer hit her first career home run in the win over South Dakota. She has also reached base in all four games.

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"We played an excellent and complete game to win the first one today against a tough South Dakota team. In game two, we struggled offensively to get anything going. The two walks in the bottom of the seventh were key to get us started and Corinne came off the bench and clutched up. She is off to an incredible start this season," said head coach Megan T. Bryant.
