MIAMI, Fla. – Junior catcher
Corinne Badger slugged her sixth home run of the weekend – a solo shot in the top of the seventh inning, but the Seawolves were narrowly edged by South Dakota, 3-1, in the FIU Tournament finale on Sunday. Stony Brook went 4-1 in its first non-conference tournament of the season and picked up wins over Drexel, FIU, South Dakota, and Brown.
South Dakota scored first as it plated a run in the first inning with a safety squeeze that put them up 1-0. The Coyotes added to their lead in the second inning when they scored a pair of runs with back-to-back RBI doubles.
The Seawolves got out of the second inning when senior infielder
Nicole McCarvill nabbed South Dakota's Tatum Villotta at the plate. Villotta was trying to score from second on a single to center, but McCarvill cutdown the run at the dish.
Stony Brook tallied four hits on the day, one being Badger's solo home run in the top of the seventh inning which got the Seawolves within two runs of the Coyotes. Following Badger's homer to lead off the inning, Stony Brook was retired in consecutive order and South Dakota secured the win.
STATS AND NOTES
- Badger went 1-3 in the game with a solo home run. The junior finished the opening weekend 6-12 with six home runs and 11 RBI. Badger entered the season with one career home run which came last season.
- Senior pitcher Shelbi Denman made her second start of the weekend. Denman tossed her 28th career complete game and stuck out 10. Her 10 strikeouts were one short of tying a career-high (struck out 11 on Mar. 23, 2019, vs. Bryant). The senior allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"Today's loss was tough because we didn't do enough to help ourselves win the ballgame. Shelbi settled in after the first two innings and was lights out. It was a terrific first weekend for us and we will continue to grow and improve," said head coach
Megan T. Bryant.
