ALBANY, N.Y. – The Stony Brook University women's basketball team (23-5, 14-4 America East) fell to Albany (20-9, 13-5 America East), 57-56, in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at SEFCU Arena.
The Seawolves jumped out to an early 11-1 advantage right out of the gate. Albany responded by going on a 12-2 run to close out the first quarter and the teams were all tied up at 13-13 to close out the frame. Stony Brook went on to outscore Albany, 13-9, in the second quarter and controlled a 26-22 lead at the halftime break.
Stony Brook put together a strong third quarter as it outscored Albany, 21-11, and led 47-33 going into the fourth. The Seawolves grew their lead to as large as 16 points as they went up 49-33 with 9:12 to go in the game. Albany mounted a comeback down the stretch of the game and used a 13-0 run to go out in front, 57-56, a score it would go on to win by.
Graduate forward
India Pagan scored a game-high tying 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting for the Seawolves. Seven of the eight Seawolves that saw action in the game tallied points. Graduate forward
McKenzie Bushee finished the contest with a near double-double as she scored nine points and pulled down seven rebounds.
STATS AND NOTES
- Pagan scored in double figures for the 19th time this season and has done so in each of the last five games. She scored 18 points or more in five games this season and is averaging 19.0 points per game over her last three contests. The forward shot a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line and grabbed two rebounds.
- Bushee scored nine points and pulled down seven rebounds. The forward shot a perfect 4-of-4 from the field. Three of her four rebounds were of the offensive variety.
- Freshman guard Erin Turral came off the bench to score eight points on 3-of-8 shooting, which included knocking down a pair of three-pointers. The eight points were the most that she scored in a game since she scored 11 against UMass Lowell on February 9. The guard dished out a career-high tying three assists.
- Senior forward Nairimar Vargas-Reyes scored seven points and pulled down eight rebounds.
- Junior guard Gigi Gonzalez totaled six points, eight assists, and five rebounds. Her eight assists tied a career-high.
- Stony Brook's 23 regular season wins are tied for the fourth-most in program history.
