Women's Hoops Returns Home to Island Federal Arena to Host NJIT: 5 Things to Know

THE MATCHUP: The Stony Brook University women's basketball team (18-2, 9-1 America East) returns home to Island Federal Arena to host NJIT (10-10, 5-4 America East) on Saturday, February 5 at 2 p.m. The game is set to air on SNY and ESPN+ with Jonny Wincott (play-by-play) and Rob Pavinelli (analyst) on the call.
 
SERIES HISTORY: This matchup marks the sixth time these two teams will go head-to-head. Stony Brook currently holds a 4-1 record against NJIT. The last time the Seawolves faced-off against the Highlanders, Stony Brook fell short, 54-49, on December 30, 2021, in Newark, N.J.
 
BATTLE OF THE SUNY'S: The Seawolves came back to pull ahead of Binghamton, 49-48, on Wednesday, February 2, to secure their ninth conference win in a row. Graduate forwards McKenzie Bushee and Leighah-Amori Wool led the scoring for Stony Brook finishing with 12 points each. Anastasia Warren filled the stat sheet with nine points, five rebounds, and converted 3-of-4 free-throws in 25 minutes of play. The Seawolves held Binghamton well below their average shooting clips, as they shot 33.3 percent from the field and 19.0 percent from beyond the arc. Their season averages are 38.4 percent and 28.8 percent, respectively. Graduate forwards India Pagan and Bushee are now the two most tenured player's in program history, playing in their 126th and 127th career contests.
 
IN THE RANKINGS: For the second time in program history, Stony Brook has received a vote in the USA Today/ WBCA Top 25 Coaches Poll on Tuesday, February 2. The Seawolves have not received a vote in the poll since the 2019-20 season, when the team received a tally on Jan. 21, 2020, marking the first time in program history. Stony Brook was ranked ninth in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid Major Top 25 poll that was released on Tuesday, February 2.
 
SEAWOLVES SCOUTING REPORT: The nine-game winning streak is a season-high for Stony Brook and the team's longest streak since they won 22 consecutive games during the 2019-20 season. The Seawolves' nine-game winning streak currently sits the team tied for seventh in the nation along with IUPUI, Jackson St., and Stephen F. Austin State. Stony Brook has now won its last four games on the road and improves to 8-2 away from home. The Seawolves are one of six teams in the nation with 18 wins on the season.
 
SCOUTING THE HIGHLANDERS: The Highlanders fell to Vermont, 56-30, on Wednesday, February 2, at home. With the loss, NJIT dropped to 10-10 (5-4 America East) on the season. NJIT's scoring offense is led by junior guard Kenna Squier. Squire currently leads the team averaging 10.8 points over 20 starts. Sophomore guard Lyzi Litwinko follows closely behind averaging 10.7 points over 19 starts. Head coach Mike Lane is in his fourth year at the helm of NJIT. Lane led the Highlanders through the program's first season in the America East in 2020-21. NJIT finished seventh in their first season with an overall record of 4-14. This is Lane's fourth appearance against Stony Brook and currently holds a 1-2 record against the Seawolves.
