STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The visiting Johns Hopkins Blue Jays scored four of the first five goals of the game against the No. 6 Stony Brook women's lacrosse program, taking a first-quarter advantage.
After that, the Seawolves found another gear, scoring 15 of the next 16 en route to a commanding 16-5 win over the No. 16 team in the country on Sunday afternoon at LaValle Stadium.
Siobhan Rafferty again powered the Seawolves at home, scoring a game-high six goals, including five in the first 30 minutes. Rafferty's goal with 58 seconds left in the first quarter started a 9-0 run to give the hosts a 10-4 lead at the 11:23 mark.
Stony Brook scored the final six of the game as well, with
Kailyn Hart and
Ellie Masera combining for five of the six.
Rayna Sabella added the sixth tally.
Joe Spallina's club outshot Hopkins 29-10 over the final three periods and forced 20 turnovers en route to another lockdown defensive performance.
STATS AND NOTES
- Rafferty now has 11 goals in two games at LaValle Stadium after her five against Dartmouth and six today. She has 15 total on the season.
- Her six goals are the most by a Seawolves player this season and tied for the most points in a game this year.
- Masera has strung together three straight performances of four or more goals. She has four such games this season. Ellie also leads the team with 26 draw controls.
- Jaden Hampel dished four assists today, tied for the most by a Seawolves player this season.
- It is also a new career high and doubled her season total entering the day.
- Sabella caused three turnovers today, also tying a 2022 season-best for a Seawolf.
- Kyla Zapolski dished a pair of assists, a new season-high.

"Today was a good rebound performance after we went down 4-1, we finished the game on a 15-1 run. We're a younger group that's just going to keep getting better and I think the thing with big game experience, the only way to get better is by being in big games. We're trying to do that as much as possible now as we head into the next parts of our schedule. After we went down, we started to read their offensive sequences a little better and we got some great saves. We were able to go on a run and it made them play a little bit faster against our defense, which plays into what we do. Our defense rebounded in a big way against a nationally-ranked team and I'm really proud of our kids." - head coach
