STONY BROOK, N.Y. – A quality start from senior pitcher
Ben Fero and timely hitting by Stony Brook's bats, led the Seawolves to a 6-4 victory over UMass Lowell in the America East opener on Friday. Stony Brook earned its second win in as many games and picked up its fifth victory of the season.
Fero got the ball in game one of the three-game series and recorded his first win of the year. The senior tossed 6.1 innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits. Fero struck out a season-high four and walked one in his fourth start of the season.
The Seawolves got on the board first when sophomore infielder
Matt Brown-Eiring drove in a run with an RBI single to right center field in the bottom of the first inning. The River Hawks knotted the game up at 1-1 thanks to a Robert Gallagher solo home run in the top of the fourth inning.
Stony Brook responded in the bottom of the fourth by plating three runs in the frame. Senior third baseman
Evan Giordano chased home junior second baseman
Brett Paulsen with a single up the middle. Freshman
David Alleva capped off the inning with a two-run single that scored Giordano and senior outfielder
Cole Durkan to put the Seawolves ahead, 4-1.
The Seawolves tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning via the long ball. Paulsen led off the inning with a solo home run to left field, and two batters later Durkan launched a solo shot to right field to extend their lead to 6-1.
UMass Lowell added two runs in the top of the seventh and one in the top of the eighth, but that was the close it would come as sophomore pitcher
Brendan Pattermann closed the door. Pattermann tossed 2.2 innings of two-hit relief and surrendered one run (earned). The sophomore racked up a career-high five strikeouts in his ninth outing of the season.

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"That was about as even of a game as you could play – we had the same number of hits, each team only made one error, it came down to their last at-bat, and I'm glad it didn't come down to ours. A lot of guys did some really good things to help us get that win. Ben's start was terrific and Pattermann hung in there – those guys were really gutsy. The pitchers grinded it out. It was a really good game, credit to UMass Lowell. It was a great way to start the weekend," said head coach
Matt Senk.
"I am just happy that we won. This is our first winning streak of 2022 and we're going to have a lot more, we're going to tack on," said Fero following the win.
