Costello’s Hot Bat & Bodrug’s Dominance in the Circle Leads Softball to 7-0 Win Over Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The reigning conference Player and Co-Rookie of the Week, freshman outfielder Alyssa Costello resumed her hot hitting on Tuesday afternoon as she helped lead the Seawolves to a 7-0 win over Hofstra. Costello went 3-4 at the plate with a home run and four RBI as she paced a Stony Brook offense that tallied seven runs on a season-high 12 hits.

Graduate pitcher Dawn Bodrug continued her dominance in the circle as she tossed a complete game shutout and struck out a season-high tying 15 batters in the process. Hofstra was only able to muster four singles together in the game as Bodrug was locked in from start to finish en route to her 36th career complete game and 13th career shutout.

After Bodrug struck out three batters in the bottom of the first inning, Costello got the Seawolves on the board in the top of the second. The freshman singled to center field to chase home junior catcher Corinne Badger.

Junior outfielder Shauna Nuss extended the lead to 3-0 in the second when she singled to left field to plate senior infielder Lindsey Osmer and Costello also came around to score on the play due to an errant throw.

Costello capped off the scoring for the Seawolves and put the game out of reach in the top of the fifth inning when she crushed a three-run home run to center field to put Stony Brook out in front, 7-0. The homer was her third in the last five games and the only long ball of the day by either team.

STATS AND NOTES
  • Bodrug went the distance for the 10th time this season and recorded her third shutout. The win was her seventh as she tossed 7.0 scoreless innings and allowed just four hits. The graduate struck out a season-high tying 15 and now has registered double-digit strikeout performances in five-straight starts.
  • Costello went 3-4 at the plate with a home run, four RBI, and two runs scored. She singled in the second, homered in the fifth, and reached on a bunt single in the seventh. It was her second three-hit game of the season and fifth multi-hit game. Costello is now on an eight-game hitting streak.
  • Badger went 2-4 in the game with a double and a triple. The triple was the first of her career as she recorded her eighth multi-hit game of the season.
  • Sophomore infielder Sofia Chambers, Osmer, and Nuss all recorded two hits apiece.
  • The Seawolves totaled a season-high 12 hits as a team in the game.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"We played a good ballgame today and it was great to see us put all three parts of the game together. Our defense was solid, Dawn was in control and our offense continues to be productive. We are getting more comfortable at the plate and everyone is contributing," said head coach Megan T. Bryant following the 7-0 win at Hofstra.
