Softball Records Split on Day Two of West Coast Swing; Knocks Off Long Beach State in Game Two

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Stony Brook University softball team (7-2) recorded a split on day two of their West Coast trip. The Seawolves were narrowly edged by Yale, 5-4, in the first game and then went on to defeat Long Beach State, 4-2, in eight innings in the second game of the day.

Graduate pitcher Dawn Bodrug led Stony Brook to the win over Long Beach State as she went the distance to pick up her fourth win in as many starts. Bodrug was aided by senior infielder Lindsey Osmer (RBI single in the sixth) and senior infielder Nicole McCarvill (two RBI single in the eighth) who came up with crucial hits en route to the win.

GAME 1: STONY BROOK – 4, YALE – 5
  • Junior pitcher Ashton Melaas made her second start as a Seawolf. Melaas tossed 3.0 innings and allowed three runs (all earned) on three hits. She struck out two and walked one.
  • Senior pitcher Shelbi Denman came on in relief of Melaas. Denman went 4.0 innings and gave up two unearned runs on four hits. The senior notched three strikeouts and walked one. Denman gave the Seawolves a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth when she launched a two-run home run to left field. The homer was just her second career hit and first career home run.
  • Sophomore infielder Kyra McFarland went 2-4 at the dish and scored a run.
  • Sophomore outfielder Alicia Orosco also went 2-4 with a single and a triple and scored a run. The triple was the first of her career.
  • Sophomore utility Catherine Anne Kupinski (single), sophomore outfielder Julianna Sanzone (single), and sophomore infielder Ashley Jacobson (double) all recorded on hit apiece.
GAME 2: STONY BROOK – 4, LONG BEACH STATE – 2 (Final in 8 innings)
  • Bodrug tossed her fourth consecutive complete game en route to her fourth win of the season. The graduate went 8.0 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits. Bodrug racked up six strikeouts and walked one.
  • Osmer tied the game up at 1-1 with an RBI single to center field in the top of the sixth inning. Osmer's single chased home McFarland who reached earlier in the frame after getting hit by a pitch.
  • The teams were tied at 1-1 after seven innings and needed extra innings to decide the outcome. Stony Brook got the first crack at it and cashed in by plating three runs in the top of the eighth inning.
  • Junior catcher Corinne Badger brought in a run after she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. McCarvill added the insurance runs that the Seawolves needed with a two-run single to left field to put Stony Brook out in front 4-1.
  • Osmer went 1-2 with an RBI single and a run scored.
  • McCarvill was 1-3 with two RBI in the game.
  • Kupinski reached base three times as she drew three walks.
STATS AND NOTES
  • Bodrug improved to 4-0 on the season as she recorded her 30th career complete game. She registered her 350th career strikeout and has now totaled 355 punch outs in her career.
  • McFarland extended her hitting streak to seven games in a row in the first game, but the streak was snapped in the second game. She has reached base in all eight games this season.
  • With the win in game two, coach Bryant picked up the 921st victory of her career.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"It was great to see us respond with a terrific team effort and win in game two after the disappointing loss to start the day. We played a complete and competitive game against a very good opponent in Long Beach State. It's a quality performance that we can learn from and build on," said head coach Megan T. Bryant.
