Softball Falls to SDSU in San Diego Classic Finale

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Stony Brook University softball team (7-3) fell to San Diego State University (13-8), 8-0, in six innings in the San Diego Classic finale on Sunday afternoon. The Seawolves recorded a 3-2 record over five games on the West Coast and picked up wins over Utah State, San Diego, and Long Beach State.

The Aztecs got on the board in the bottom of the third inning when Taylor Adams sent a solo home run to center field. Later in the inning, Mac Barbara hit a solo shot of her own to give San Diego State a 2-0 lead.

Stony Brook's best scoring chance came in the top of the fourth inning when junior catcher Corinne Badger singled to center and sophomore outfielder Julianna Sanzone walked. Badger and Sanzone stole third and second, respectively to put both runners in scoring position with one out.

Senior infielder Nicole McCarvill was thrown out at first trying to reach on a bunt and then sophomore infielder Sofia Chambers fouled out to third to end the fourth inning. The Aztecs extended their lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single by AJ Murphy and then a two-run single by Bella Espinoza.

San Diego State tacked on three runs in the sixth when Barbara hit a three-run home run to right center field to put the Aztecs up 8-0 and clinched the game in their favor as the 8-run rule was enforced.
