No. 6 Women's Lacrosse Erases Early Deficit En Route to 11th Straight Victory

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Down 4-1 early to No. 24 Yale, the No. 6 Stony Brook women's lacrosse team had to battle in order to keep its winning streak alive.

They would do just that, finding another gear to fly past Yale 14-10 in New Haven, Conn., on Monday afternoon. The win is the Seawolves' 11th in a row, improving their record to 13-2.

Kailyn Hart powered the Seawolves attack, pouring in six of Stony Brook's tallies on the day, including the first two and three of the opening four goals for the visitors. Rayna Sabella and Ellie Masera each recorded hat tricks, while Kyla Zapolski scored a pair. Masera also added a pair of assists to record a five-point day.

Joe Spallina's club found themselves down three on a pair of separate occasions, trailing 4-1 and 6-3 before ripping off a 5-0 run to turn that deficit into an 8-6 advantage with 8:45 to play in the third.

Stony Brook would hold the advantage the rest of the way, growing the lead as large as four on multiple occasions over the nationally-ranked Bulldogs, who were held to just 12 shots on the offensive end.

STATS AND NOTES
  • The win over a ranked opponent is Stony Brook's fourth of the season as they improve to 4-2 in such contests. They've won four of the last five and three in a row against ranked teams, defeating No. 16 Johns Hopkins, No. 10 Princeton before beating No. 24 Yale today.
  • Hart matched her career-high with six goals. She recorded that two games ago, with a six-spot in Binghamton. The sophomore has tallied eight straight hat tricks, totaling 35 goals over that span. Her six goals match the most by a Seawolves player this season, joining Masera and Siobhan Rafferty.
  • Masera tallied her third consecutive, five-point day and now has three or more goals in six consecutive contests. Her five draw controls bring her up to 91 on the season and 116 for her career. The latter number brings her into the top 10 all time in program history.
  • Haley Dillon had another dominant defensive day, recording three ground balls and four caused turnovers. She's up to 38 CTs on her resume this year, besting her total of 33 in 2019 that sits fourth all-time.
  • Sabella's hat trick is her third of the season and fourth of her Seawolves career.
  • Zapolski finished with a three-point day with two goals and an assist, matching her season-best output. She also had two caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls, bringing her totals to five and six, respectively, for the past 48 hours.
  • Charlotte Verhulst had a season-best seven draw controls, matching her total from at Syracuse on Feb. 20.
  • Stony Brook's 16 draw controls are tied for the second-most this season, one lower from the 17 at Princeton on March 29.
  • The Seawolves defense forced 20 turnovers for the fifth time this season. Yale's 20 today are tied for the second-most by a Stony Brook opponent this season.

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"This was a solid win for our team in a trap game coming off Saturday night's senior night and an afternoon Monday road game. We dug outselves a first-quarter hole but I think we stepped up when we needed to and found a way. A win like today goes a long way in making us battled tested come May." - head coach Joe Spallina.

UP NEXT
The Seawolves round out their regular season on Saturday afternoon, taking on UAlbany at 3 p.m., in the Capital District.
