FLUSHING, N.Y. — The New York Mets selected the contract of Travis Jankowski as part of its pre-Opening Day moves on Wednesday afternoon, the third time he has been selected to open a campaign with a Major League club.
He was on the 2016 and 2018 opening rosters with the San Diego Padres, playing 334 games over five seasons out west. Last season, he played 76 games, finishing with a career high .715 OPS while slashing .252/.364/.351.
He is one of five outfielders on the slate, joining Mark Canha, Starling Marte, Brandon Nimmo and Dom Smith for the Opening Weekend trip to Washington.
The former Seawolves All-American is one of five players who have made The Show, joining Daniel Zamora, who is currently in AAA with Oklahoma City, Nick Tropeano, who is currently in AAA with Round Rock, Tom Koehler and Joe Nathan.
The Mets open their season Thursday night, taking on the Washington Nationals at 7 p.m., in the nation's capital. The home opener will be on Jackie Robinson Day, April 15, when the squad opens a three-game set with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
