Dominate Pitching Rolls Softball to Doubleheader Sweep Against Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Stony Brook University softball team traveled to Providence, R.I. to face-off against the Providence Friars in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Seawolves rolled to a pair of wins against the Friars at Glay Field.

Stony Brook got the day started by picking up a 3-0 victory over Providence in the first game of the day. The Seawolves then went on to defeat the Friars, 1-0, in the second game of the doubleheader.

The Seawolves were paced by dominate pitching in both games. Senior pitcher Shelbi Denman tossed her second complete game of the season and first shutout of the season in game one. Graduate pitcher Dawn Bodrug kept the momentum going in the circle as she threw her 14th complete game and seventh shutout of the season in the second game.

Stony Brook's offense was paced by sophomore utility Catherine Anne Kupinski in both contests. Kupinski went 2-3 at the plate in game one including a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning to increase the Seawolves' lead to 2-0. Kupinski continued her hot hitting into game two as she plated Stony Brook's only run on an RBI single.

  • Junior catcher Corinne Badger went 3-4 at the plate with one RBI. Badger has reached base in six consecutive games.
  • Sophomore outfielder Alicia Orosco went 2-4 with one RBI and one run. Orosco added the third run in the top of the fourth inning when she singled to bring Sofia Chambers home.
GAME 2: STONY BROOK – 1, PROVIDENCE – 0

QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"We played two complete ballgames today and were led by great efforts in the circle by Shelbi and Dawn. It's an accomplishment to put back-to-back shutouts together these days. We kept our poise and focus in that close second game. The lefties set the table and Catherine Anne came up big," said head coach Megan T. Bryant.
