CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, the North Carolina Tar Heels entered today's game with 14 goals as their season-low for the 2022 campaign.
The stout Seawolves defense held them to just eight but the Seawolves offense could not get rolling in an 8-5 loss in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Thursday night in Chapel Hill.
In a first half of runs, North Carolina answered
Ellie Masera's opening goal with a three-tally stretch, taking a 3-1 lead with 12:19 to go in the half. The Seawolves would answer right back, with a pair of goals from
Jaden Hampel tying the night at three and
Siobhan Rafferty giving the Seawolves a 4-3 advantage heading into the break.
The Tar Heels scored five of the six in the second half, including the last four after Masera's second gave Stony Brook a 5-4 lead with 5:35 to go in the third.
STATS AND NOTES
- The Seawolves held 15 of 19 teams to single digits this season, allowing 15 or more once this year (Northwestern, 16).
- Masera tallied a point in her 20th consecutive contest, the longest streak on the team. She now has 17 multi-goal games to her name and 23 multi-point contests.
- Jaden Hampel added her seventh multi-goal game of the year and 12th multi-goal contest of her career.
- Siobhan Rafferty recorded her second consecutive game of four ground balls, leading the team in the category. She also added a pair of caused turnovers.
