STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Stony Brook football graduate offensive lineman
Kyle Nunez has been nominated for the prestigious William V. Campbell Trophy as announced by the National Football Foundation (NFF).
"Kyle was a good high school football player who developed into a well-above average college offensive lineman. From day one he competed and adapted to the physicality of the game. Off the field, he's done all the things the right way as displayed by being a two-year captain and a leader. On the field, he understands the game of football at this level," said Stony Brook head coach
Chuck Priore.
The William V. Campbell Trophy has become the most prestigious and desirable academic award in college football. The trophy recognizes an individual as the absolute best in the country for his academic success, football performance, and exemplary leadership.
To be nominated for the award, a candidate must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility; have a grade point average of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale; have outstanding football ability as a first team player; and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.
Nunez is a six-time member of the CAA Academic Honor Roll and has donated his time to engaging with the local Long Island community. Over the course of his career, he volunteered at the Stony Brook University Children's Hospital, local elementary schools, and at-risk youth programs.
He has played an active role in Breast Cancer Awareness initiatives on campus and is a leader in Athletes Creating Equality for Diversity Equity and Inclusion. He has been involved in the football program's annual Be the Match Bone Marrow Drive. He is the leader of Uplifting Athletes Chapter and assisted with the America East Food Frenzy initiatives.
Nunez has claimed three All-American accolades this preseason. The graduate was tabbed to the Stats Perform All-American Second Team, HERO Sports Preseason All-American Second Team, and the Phil Steele Preseason All-American Third Team. He was also selected to the CAA Football Preseason All-Conference Team.
Nunez has been named to the All-CAA Second Team three times in his career and was once selected to the All-Conference First Team.
Last season, the offensive lineman helped lead the Seawolves to 10 100-plus yard rushing performances and as a result was selected to the All-CAA Second Team. The Seawolves ran for 200 yards or more in three games in 2021 and racked up a season-high 321 rushing yards in the 36-14 win over UAlbany to reclaim the Golden Apple in the season finale.
The Seawolves are set to kick-off the 2022 season on Thursday, September 1, at 7 p.m., against Rhode Island at LaValle Stadium.
Tickets are on sale now to be a part of the action on Long Island.
