PUERTO RICO – Stony Brook women's basketball graduate forward Nairimar Vargas-Reyes has made the Puerto Rico National Team and will represent her native country in the 2022 FIBA World Cup in Australia. Vargas-Reyes joins former teammate and Seawolves' alumna India Pagan who is also a member of team Puerto Rico.

"I'm so excited for Nairi's opportunity to represent her country and Stony Brook. This experience is one that not many athletes get to have and I know she will take full advantage of every moment," said Stony Brook head coach Ashley Langford.

Puerto Rico tips off play in the FIBA World Cup on Thursday, September 22, when it goes head-to-head with Bosnia and Herzegovina. Following the opening game, Vargas-Reyes and team Puerto Rico will face the United States on Friday, September 23, followed by a meeting with Belgium on Saturday, September 24, to close out the opening week of play.

Vargas-Reyes has been a spark plug for the Seawolves over her two seasons on Long Island. In 2021-22, she averaged 5.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game in 23 games. Vergas-Reyes ranked second on the team in rebounding and ninth overall in the conference. She pulled down a career-high 14 boards in Stony Brook's win over Penn on December 10.

The forward recorded her first career double-double against St. Francis Brooklyn on November 28, as she tallied 13 points and 13 rebounds. Over the course of the season, she shot an efficient 41.8 percent from the field (41-98) which was a career-best.

Vargas-Reyes joined the Puerto Rico National Team after she represented her country as a member its 3x3 National Team that competed in the FIBA 3x3 Nations League in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic from August 13-19.
