Football Knocked Off by FBS Foe UMass

AMHERST, Mass. – The Seawolves and Minutemen went head-to-head on the gridiron for the fourth time in history on Saturday. It marked the first meeting between the teams since UMass made the jump to the FBS level.

Stony Brook outgained UMass in total yards, 333-264, but ultimately fell to the Minutemen, 20-3. UMass jumped on the board first on its opening drive with an 18-yard touchdown catch by Cam Sullivan-Brown.

UMass upped its lead to 17-0 with 2:49 to play in the second quarter before the Seawolves collected their first points of the game. With 30 seconds remaining in the second quarter, redshirt junior kicker Angelo Guglielmello drilled a 29-yard field goal to cut UMass' lead to 17-3.

The Minutemen added a field goal with 31 seconds to play in the third quarter to take a 20-3 lead, which they would hold on to win by.

As a team, Stony Brook rushed for 127 yards. It was their fifth consecutive game of 100-plus yards on the ground dating to November 6, 2021, at Maine. Since the start of the 2018 season, the Seawolves have rushed for over 100 yards as a team in 37 of their 41 games played.

STATS AND NOTES
  • Redshirt freshman quarterback Daron Bryden went 15-31 for 186 yards. The 15 completions and 186 yards were both early career-highs for the Bloomfield, Connecticut native. Bryden racked up 44 yards on a strike to redshirt junior wide receiver Shawn Harris Jr. The 44-yard connection was the longest offensive play through two games for the Seawolves.
  • Redshirt sophomore running back Jayden Cook tallied a career-high 103 yards from scrimmage. Cook registered 73 yards on 14 carries and 30 yards on five catches. He posted career-highs in carries, rushing yards, receptions, and receiving yards in the game.
  • Harris Jr. made three catches for 72 yards, while redshirt junior wide receiver Tyler Devera totaled a career-high tying four receptions for a career-high 62 yards.
  • Guglielmello's made field goal was his first of the season after he converted seven out of 10 attempts last season.
  • Redshirt senior defensive back Quenton Porter accounted for the Seawolves' lone turnover in the game. Porter came up with an interception on a pass that went off the hands of a UMass wide receiver.
  • Graduate defensive back Carthell Flowers-Lloyd recorded seven tackles (four solo, three assists) and a game-high 3.5 TFLs. His 3.5 TFLs were a new career-high.
  • Graduate linebacker Reidgee Dimanche made a game-high eight tackles (four solo, four assists).
  • Redshirt senior defensive lineman Dakar Edwards registered a career-high tying six tackles (two solo, four assists) and his first sack of the season. Edwards dropped UMass quarterback Gino Campiotti for an 11-yard loss to force a punt in the second quarter.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"We played really hard and competed the whole game for four quarters, which was good to see. We had some uncharacteristic procedure penalties which we have not had all preseason and it hurt us in a couple of crucial situations. Our defense gave up 13 points when it was all said and done – when you look at it from that perspective I thought it was a good day for that group (the defense)," said head coach Chuck Priore.

NEXT UP
Stony Brook returns to the field on Saturday, September 24, when they travel to Richmond to take on the Spiders at 2 p.m. It marks the first time that the Seawolves will play at Richmond since November 2, 2019. Stony Brook is 4-1 in its last five games against the Spiders.
