STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook men's basketball team (7-12, 3-3 CAA) led at halftime against the Northeastern Huskies (8-10, 4-3 CAA) on Thursday night, but could not hold on in the second half, falling 79-66 at Island Federal Arena.
Graduate forward
Frankie Policelli sparked the Seawolves, scoring 15 points in the first half alone. The New Hartford, New York, native shot 6-of-9 from the field in the first frame and pulled down four rebounds. Stony Brook led 32-31 after the first 20 minutes of action.
Northeastern relied heavily on the three-point shot to sprint past the Seawolves. The Huskies shot 13-of-20 (65 percent) from three-point range as a team. Northeastern's Jahmyl Telfort and Masai Troutman both scored 20 points in the game. Troutman set a new career-high in points and nailed four of his six three-point attempts.
Stony Brook freshman forward
Leon Nahar put forth an excellent effort in Thursday night's game. He scored the first points of his collegiate career with a layup in the first half. In the second half, Nahar played in six minutes, scoring five points, and dishing out three assists. He also drew a charge on the defensive end.
After Stony Brook trailed by 15 points in the second half, it began to comeback slightly with the spark that Nahar and freshman guard
Toby Onyekonwu provided.
With just over four minutes to play, Onyekonwu drilled a three pointer off an assist from Nahar, which cut the Seawolves' deficit to eight points.
On the ensuing possession, Nahar knocked down a three in the corner, which cut Stony Brook's deficit to seven points. The freshman duo combined for 21 points off the bench in the game.
Northeastern gained control of the game early in the second half and shot 71 percent from the field and 73 percent from three-point range in the second frame to cement its victory.
STATS AND NOTES
- Policelli paced the Seawolves in scoring with 22 points, tying his career high. He has now scored 22 points on four separate occasions and three times this season. He shot 9-of-12 from the floor, grabbed five rebounds, dished out two assists, and totaled a block and a steal.
- Policelli led the team in scoring for the sixth time this season and led the team in rebounding for the 14thtime this year.
- Onyekonwu scored a career-high 14 points, shooting 4-of-7 from the field and 5-of-5 from the free-throw line. He totaled two rebounds, two assists, and a steal in 21 minutes played.
- Senior guard Tyler Stephenson-Moore dropped 14 points on the night, with three assists and two rebounds.
- Stephenson-Moore logged 40 minutes for the seventh time this season.
- It was Stony Brook's second meeting against Northeastern this season. The Seawolves and Huskies split the regular season series, 1-1.
