Seawolves Take Down William & Mary at Pritchard in Four Sets

STONY BROOK, NY --The Stony Brook volleyball team fired back after dropping the first set to secure a 3-1 victory (27-29, 25-19, 25-18, 25-22) against the William & Mary Tribe at Pritchard Gymnasium on Saturday.

The Seawolves were led by a double-double from Kali Moore, who registered 17 kills and 21 digs on the day, and Torri Henry's 53 assists this afternoon. Leoni Kunz also added 13 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Julia Patsos chipped in with 15 digs to go with six blocks from Abby Campbell to help the Seawolves the victory. 

The win boosted the Seawolves' record to 11-13 overall and 6-7 in CAA action. The victory also surged Stony Brook to within a game of the sixth and final CAA Tournament spot, currently held by 7-6 Hofstra.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

SET 1 | The Seawolves fell in a back-and-forth first set, losing 29-27 in a game that featured four lead changes and was tied 15 times. Neither team led by more than three points in the frame.

SET 2 | Stony Brook fought back after dropping the first set to take set two 25-19, evening the match at one set apiece. The Seawolves scored first and never trailed in the set to earn the victory. SBU opened up as much as a nine point lead at 16-7 before closing out the set. The Seawolves hit .308 and only committed two attacking errors over the course of the set, as the offense also got a boost from five service aces.
 

SET 3 | Stony Brook built on that second-set success with a victory in set number three to open up a 2-1 lead. The Seawolves led from the opening point on in the set to earn a 25-18 victory. The seven-point victory also marked Stony Brook's largest lead in the set. The offense continued to shine totaling 16 kills on a .448 hitting percentage. Stony Brook's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four William & Mary attacks in the frame.

SET 4 | Stony Brook closed out the match with a 25-22 fourth-set victory, winning their third straight set. Down 21-19, the Seawolves scored three straight to gain a 22-21 lead, and finished things off with three straight after the match was tied at 22. Kills by Ava Jackson and Campbell and an ace from Patsos finished things off.
 



STATS AND NOTES
  • Stony Brook had four players in double figures in kills (Moore, Kunz, Campbell, and Jackson). 
  • Stony Brook had three players in double figures in digs (Moore, Henry, and Patsos). 
  • Ava Jackson had a match-high three aces in the win. Also, it was the second time this season she captured 10 or more kills (12 vs N.C. A&T on Sept. 30). 
  • Kali Moore registered a double-double with a match-high 17 kills and 21 digs. Her 17 kills was her second highest of the season (24 against St. Francis (PA)) and was a new season-high in digs. 
  • The win boosted the Seawolves' record to 11-13 overall and 6-7 in CAA action.
  • Stony Brook moves to 2-2 all-time against William & Mary with two consecutive victories against the Tribe.

Stony Brook returns to action tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 29 against William & Mary. The Seawolves and Tribe close out the weekend with first serve set for 1 p.m. from Pritchard Gymnasium.
