Softball Adds Five Student-Athletes on National Signing Day

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Stony Brook softball head coach Megan Bryant announced the addition of five student-athletes as part of National Signing Day.

Nicole Allen - Penfield, N.Y. - OF/1B
Allen plays scholastically at Fairport High School, hitting .519 with a .552 on-base percentage during her junior year. Allen helped lead her squad to a 13-8 season and earned All-County honors. She also plays with the Conklin Raiders 18U Gold Team under the direction of head coach Mike Curro. Nicole is the daughter of Gabrielle DiGregorio and Mike Allen.

"Nicole is a passionate and talented high-energy player who loves the game and loves to compete," coach Bryant said. "She swings it with power from the left side with an exceptional OPS. Her solid defense and RBI ability are a great addition to our line-up."

Kaelyn Larkin - Medfield, Mass. - OF
As a junior at Medfield High School, Larkin hit .600 with 7 home runs and 28 runs batted in. She helped lead Medfield to a Tri-Valley League Championship and earned Tri-Valley League MVP and All-Star honors. Larkin played travel with RI Thunder 18U Gold National for coach Frank Lieto. Kaelyn is the daughter of Garrett and Heather Larkin.

"Kaelyn is a two-sport athlete who can run, cover ground and hit with excellent power," coach Bryant said. "She has a great IQ at the plate, understands her swing and the process and has the athleticism to become an outstanding college outfielder. Her upside is tremendous."

Sophia Naese - Plantation, Fla. - IF
Naese plays scholastically at Western High School and travel with TNT Florida Black for coach Anthony Crisanti. As a junior at Western, Naese batted .300 with a .431 on-base percentage, helping lead her team to a 19-8 record and a first-place finish in 7A District 14. Sophia is the daughter of Michelle and Michael Naese.

"Sophia is a slick-fielding infielder who plays with a high motor and leads with gritty play and her ability to be vocal," coach Bryant said. "She is versatile in her skill set defensively and is a competitor at the plate with gap power and the ability to extend at-bats. We look forward to seeing Sophia's game grow at the next level."

Crimson Rice - Spokane, Wash. - P/1B
Rice comes to the Island by way of Spokane, Washington. She plays scholastically at Shadle Park High School and travel with the Washington Angels 18U Gold under coach Bob Benson. As a junior at Shadle Park, Rice posted a .508 batting average with eight home runs and 46 runs batted in. A two-way player, Rice was 14-2 in the circle with 170 strikeouts across 92-plus innings of work, with a WHIP of .856 and a batting average against of .142. Rice helped her team to an 18-3 record and the Greater Spokane League Championship, earning league MVP honors along the way. Crimson is the daughter of Jaime and Luke Rice.

"Crimson is a true three-way player and will help us in the circle, at first base and with her bat," coach Bryant said. "She adds power to our line-up, is a tough competitor on the mound and is so athletic at the corner. Crimson walks the talk and brings the intangibles we are all looking for in our players."

Mia Vannelli - Cheektowaga, N.Y. - C/UT
Vannelli plays scholastically at Depew High School and travel with Impact Gold National Tremors for coach Lou Bishop. As a junior at Depew, Vannelli batted .566 with an on-base percentage of .693. She hit seven homers, drove in 34 runs and scored a school record 41 runs in leading her team to a 16-4 record. She was named First Team All-State, All-WNY First Team and was the ECIC Player Of The Year. A two-sport athlete, Vannelli is also a standout basketball player at Depew. Mia is the daughter of Kristen and Tom Vannelli.

"Mia is a versatile, athletic and smart player who can help our team behind the plate and at multiple positions on the field," coach Bryant said. "She is an excellent hitter with a great eye and approach at the plate. Mia also has power and the ability to set the table or drive in runs."

"We are so happy and grateful to welcome Crimson, Mia, Nicole, Kaelyn and Sophia and their families to our Seawolves family. All five young women are high-character individuals who are  committed to personal, academic and athletic success," Bryant said. "In the classroom, they are strong students who are a great match for our University. On the field, they bring power, athleticism, versatility and competitiveness to our program. They are passionate about the game and about playing for Stony Brook. We look forward to all that lies ahead!"
