Men's Basketball Opens Season at St. John's on Tuesday

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Stony Brook University men's basketball team tips off the 2023-24 season on the road against St. John's on Tuesday, November 7. The Seawolves face the Red Storm in a nationally televised contest on Fox Sports 1 at 7 p.m. from Carnesecca Arena in Queens.

THE MATCHUP
  • Tuesday night marks the tenth matchup between Stony Brook and St. John's in the overall series history. 
  • It will be the third time the two programs meet in season-opening fashion. 
  • The meeting will be the seventh in the month of November. 
  • Stony Brook visits Queens for the eighth time in the overall series history. 
SEASON-OPENER HISTORY
  • Stony Brook has lost its season-opening game in four consecutive seasons: Florida (2022-23), George Mason (2021-22), Saint Peter's (2020-21), Yale (2019-20). 
  • The Seawolves last season-opening victory came against George Washington on the road in 2018-19. 
  • Stony Brook is 31-27 all-time in season openers dating back to the program's inaugural season in 1965-66.
  • Since transitioning to Division I for the 1999-00 season, the Seawolves are 10-14 in season openers.
2022-23 REWIND
  • In its inaugural season in the CAA, Stony Brook finished 11-22 overall and 6-12 in league play, earning the No. 10 seed in the CAA Championship.
  • The Seawolves faced off with North Carolina A&T in the program's first taste of the CAA postseason, upsetting the No. 7 seeded Aggies to claim the program's first postseason victory as a member of the league.
  • The season ultimately came to a close at the hands of the eventual conference champion Charleston Cougars. Year one in the CAA saw the Seawolves finish 11-22 overall, highlighted by victories over Army, Northeastern and Drexel.
  • Tyler Stephenson-Moore was tabbed to the CAA's All- Conference Third Team, pacing the Seawolves in scoring average (14.3 ppg) and field goals made (152) and finishing second on the squad in rebounding (4.3 rpg) and assists (66).
PRESEASON PROGNOSTICATIONS
  • Stony Brook was selected to finish ninth in the 2023-24 CAA Preseason Poll, as voted on by the league's head coaches.
  • Stephenson-Moore earned an All-CAA Preseason Second Team nod.
CAA OUTLOOK
  • Charleston was voted to finish first in the 2023-24 CAA Preseason Poll, receiving 165 votes and 10 of the league's 14 first-place votes. 
  • UNCW was picked second, receiving three first-place votes, while Drexel claimed the last remaining first-place vote and was selected to finish third in the poll. 
  • Drexel's Amari Williams was tabbed as the 2023-24 Preseason Player of the Year. 
SCHEDULING TOUGH
  • Stony Brook faces Power-5 conference opponents Nebraska and Michigan State on the road, as well as a tough-opening season test at St. John's, who is receiving votes in both national polls.
  • The Seawolves play Rider, picked to win the MAAC, and eight different foes that were picked to finish in the top-half of their respective leagues: Norfolk State (2nd, MEAC), Michigan State (2nd, Big Ten), Yale (2nd, Ivy), Bryant (3rd, AE), Brown (4th, Ivy), Duquesne (4th, A-10), St. John's (5th, BIG EAST), Wagner (5th, NEC).
