STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Earning another national postseason honor, redshirt freshman wide receiver
Anthony Johnson has been named to the 2023 Stats Perform FCS Freshman All-America Team, Presented by FedEx Ground, the outlet announced Tuesday afternoon.
Johnson picks up his second Freshman All-American laurel this season, having received the same honor from FCS Football Central on Nov. 27. He is Stony Brook's 12th All-American from Stats Perform, the second wide receiver to receive All-American from the outlet (Kevin Norrell, 2012) and Stony Brook's first Freshman All-American on the list.
The Burlington, N.J. native put up an impressive first season on Long Island, leading all FCS freshmen in receptions (59), receptions per game (5.9), receiving yards (714) and average receiving yards (71.4). The aforementioned numbers all ranked top 10 in the Coastal Athletic Association and his total receptions were tied for sixth most in a single season in program history.
Johnson averaged 12.1 yards per catch and finished with three touchdowns, all of which came on receptions of 20 or more yards. He hauled in a reception of at least 20 yards in eight games in 2023 and also caught at least five passes in seven games, the first Stony Brook receiver to do so since Ray Bolden in 2015.
He was named All-American among 25 standouts by the outlet on Tuesday and was one of just two wide receivers on the list. Johnson's freshman honor was one of six awarded to the top FCS freshman for 2023.
All told, the wideout has taken five postseason honors – two Freshman All-Americans, a selection as a Jerry Rice Award finalist and Third Team All-CAA from both the conference and Phil Steele.
