Men’s Basketball Falls in Regular Season Finale at Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Stony Brook men's basketball team (10-21, 6-12 CAA) fell to the Charleston Cougars (28-3, 16-2 CAA) in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at TD Arena, 92-52.

Charleston clinched at least a share of the CAA regular season title with its seventh-straight victory and nation-leading 28th win of the season.

The Seawolves were led by graduate forward Frankie Policelli, who registered his 12th double-double of the season. Policelli totaled a team-high 22 points and team-high 11 rebounds in the loss.

Policelli's 12 double-doubles ranks as the fourth-most in a single-season by an individual player in program history and the most since Akwasi Yeboah had 10 double-doubles in 2018-19. The New Hartford, New York, native shot 7-of-16 from the field, 3-of-7 from three-point range, and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line in 36 minutes of action.

Stony Brook was able to keep up with the Cougars in the early minutes of the game. The Seawolves even grabbed a hold of the lead for a quick period after a three pointer from Policelli with 17:48 left to play in the first half. However, Charleston would prove to be too much to handle as it would eventually run away with the lead and ultimately the contest.

Junior guard Tanahj Pettway also scored in double figures, totaling 12 points on the day. Pettway shot 5-of-10 from the floor.

The Seawolves have concluded the 2022-23 regular season with a 10-21 overall record, 6-12 conference record, 7-7 home record, 3-13 road record, and 0-1 record at neutral sites.

STATS AND NOTES
  • Policelli scored 11 points in each half to total 22 points on the day.
  • Freshman guard Toby Onyekonwu led the way for the Seawolves with four assists. Onyekonwu added seven rebounds and two points.
  • Freshman guard Andrew Heiden appeared for the first time since December 9 at Bryant.
  • Stony Brook had 10 players appear in the contest.
QUOTES FROM THE SEAWOLVES
"Charleston was awesome today. Give them a lot of credit for how well they played. We really struggled on both ends to deal with their versatility and depth. They are an excellent team and we need to regroup and have a good week of prep heading into the conference tournament," said head coach Geno Ford.
