TROY, Ala. – The Stony Brook baseball team (0-6, 0-0 CAA) scored five runs in the ninth inning in Sunday's series finale against the Troy Trojans (7-0, 0-0 Sun Belt), but could not complete the comeback, falling 9-7.
The Seawolves came into the ninth inning trailing, 9-2. Freshman
Johnny Pilla led off the ninth with a pinch-hit walk. Sophomore
Anthony Gentile followed Pilla with a pinch-hit single. With runners at the corners and no outs, freshman right fielder
Matthew Wright ripped a one-run single to bring home Pilla and make it 9-3.
A couple of batters later, junior second baseman
Evan Fox put the ball in play and made something happen. Fox hit a ground ball to shortstop and Gentile scored. Troy's shortstop made an error allowing Wright to score as well. Fox picked up his second RBI of the game and brought Stony Brook within four runs.
With runners on second and third and one out, graduate third baseman
Evan Giordano came up in a big spot. Giordano hit an RBI single back up the middle, bringing home freshman
Joseph Delanzo.
Senior designated hitter
Shane Paradine then grounded into a double play, which allowed Fox to score. The Seawolves were trailing, 9-7.
Stony Brook got the tying run to the plate in the final frame, but could not complete the comeback in the series finale at Troy.
STATS AND NOTES
- Eight Seawolves totaled at least one hit in the game.
- Giordano, junior Matt Brown-Eiring, and sophomore Matt Miceli each totaled a multi-hit game.
- Fox totaled two runs batted in, while Giordano, Brown-Eiring, and Wright added one RBI.
- Brown-Eiring had the Seawolves' lone extra base hit with a ninth-inning double.
- Freshman left-handed pitcher Sadier Vicioso made his collegiate debut out of the bullpen. He went 2.1 innings and recorded two strikeouts.
- Stony Brook hit .314 (11-for-35) as a team in the game. The Seawolves also shined with two outs, hitting .500 (6-for-12) in two-out situations.
- Stony Brook totaled 11 hits, while Troy totaled 9.
NEXT UP
Stony Brook will host Saint Peter's on Wednesday, March 1, in its home opener. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on FloBaseball from Joe Nathan Field.
