CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Stony Brook baseball team (5-11, 0-2 CAA) dropped their second game in a row to the College of Charleston Cougars (13-5, 4-1 CAA) by a final score of 3-2 in 11 innings this afternoon at The Ballpark at Patriots Point.
College of Charleston pulled away with the one-run victory on a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th inning. Despite the defeat, the Seawolves had their chances to jump out in front of the Cougars, but fell just short of capitalizing.
Graduate Ben Fero again produced his second quality outing in a row after allowing just two earned runs and struck out two batters over his season-high 6.1 innings on the hill for Stony Brook.
After Fero retired six of his first seven batters, the Seawolves jumped on the board first in the top half of the third inning. Senior Brett Paulsen led the inning off by singling through the right side and then advanced to third base after junior Ryan Micheli produced his first double of the season, putting two runners in scoring position with no outs. The next batter, Matthew Wright did his job by driving in Paulsen on a sacrifice-fly, giving Stony Brook the 1-0 advantage.
The Cougars would respond with a run in the next half inning on a home run but Stony Brook answered right back with a blast of their own in the fourth. Graduate Evan Giordano belted his team-high third home run of the season and 25th of his career, which passed Stony Brook legend Willie Carmona for 8th all-time in program history.
The right-hander Fero would settle in as he stranded runners at first and third in the fourth inning and then retired the next six batters in order through the sixth inning. In the seventh inning, the Cougars got one run back to tie the game at 2-2. Senior Josh O'Neill entered the game for Fero and struck out the first two batters he faced to strand the runner at second base and kept the game tied.
O'Neill struck out four batters, allowed two hits, and one unearned run over the final four innings for Stony Brook. In the 11th inning, the Cougars loaded the bases after two Stony Brook errors and a walk. Following a fielder's-choice out at the plate, sophomore Tyler Sorrentino ended the game on a walk-off hit to left-field.
